Chapter Fifteen

O i, you little maggot!” barked the irate young lady. “Watch where you’re going!” she said, in response to having been barged unceremoniously out of the way by the younger lad. She dusted herself down, conscious of the giggling in the corridor emanating from her fellow pupils at her expense. It was a jungle in the school corridor, this she knew. And if the situation had been reversed, she could well have found herself among the throng sniggering at someone else’s expense. She shrugged her shoulders and carried on, conscious this delay, minimal as it was, would mean a position anywhere near the front of the lunch queue would be seriously compromised.

“What’s with that tie, Melanie?” Miss Stead, her math teacher, appearing suddenly in the hallway, asked with a stern expression, further impeding Melanie’s immediate progress.

“Sorry, Miss, I’ll straighten it up right away,” Melanie responded, raising her hand to her throat in such a practised motion that it was clear this was the exact type of question she was asked at least several times each day. She continued on her way, clutching at her neck for Miss Stead’s sustained benefit, until she’d safely progressed further away from any potential scrutiny about the errant nature of her attire, and at which point, feeling safe, she dropped her hand again.

“Hey!” Melanie called out, picking up her pace, just then, as she spotted her friend Bonnie some distance ahead. “Hey, Bonnie!” she said, attempting to cut through the rabble of ravenous pupils heading to the dining room, but her progress was impeded by the sheer numbers trying to squeeze through the main doors’ bottleneck, like sand through an hourglass.

Thirty seconds or so later and finally in the lunchroom, Melanie partially jumped the lengthy queue, pushing her way back into it ahead of several lads. They were much younger and smaller than she was, so they didn’t offer up much resistance. But it was clear they were none too pleased at having their place in line usurped. Melanie ignored them and turned her attention to Bonnie, her flame-haired friend, and the reason Melanie had chosen that particular place in line to cut in.

“Oh, heya, Mel,” Bonnie said, turning round in response to the hand placed on her shoulder.

“This queue is savage, Bonnie. How’s about we go somewhere else for a nice sausage bap?” Melanie suggested.

“Have you been making friends?” Bonnie asked with a laugh, upon noticing the scowling, glaring faces of the lads stood just behind her friend.

“Who, them?” Melanie replied, casting the boys a look, prompting the lads to fall into order, finding something fascinating on the floor with which to suddenly focus their attention. “What do you say, Bonn?” Melanie asked, now that any potential youth uprising had been brought under control.

“Yeah,” Bonnie agreed, looking up the line of pupils moving at less than a snail’s pace. “Yeah, let’s do it. We’ll be here all day, otherwise.”

“See ya!” one of the braver lads said to them from behind, although focusing once again on his shoes when Melanie turned in response.
